“And God said, this is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth” Genesis 9:12-13

God delivers a visible sign that reminds His people of His everlasting covenant. “I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth” [Gen9:11]. The Lord’s “never again” refers to the universal flood during the time of Noah. Due to humanity’s wickedness as “every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.. the Lord was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart” [Gen6]. Yet, there was Noah, “by faith, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household” [Heb11:7]. And through faith, he built the ark, step by step until the deluge would ravage all the earth. As the water would subside, the Lord gave Noah the visible sign of a rainbow to serve as a reminder of the Lord’s everlasting covenant.

Therefore, a rainbow was not simply a rainbow. But rather, it served as a reminder of the Lord’s continued grace throughout the flood narrative. How comforting this must have been for Noah and His family as this visible sign would remind them of God’s faithfulness to His Word.

As we live in this life of faith, we too, have many visible markers that point us to God’s bountiful mercy. Whether it is the food on the table, or the clothes that you wear, or even the sun, moon and stars, they remind us of God’s creative power. And every time we dwell upon the Cross and Empty Tomb, we take great comfort in the “for you” of the Gospel. How comforting this is!

I know what are you thinking, “coloring? Isn’t that for children?” Yes, this may be so, yet it shall serve as another opportunity for you to see the visible markers that point us to God’s creation, redemption and sanctification. You and I both know the busyness of life and how we fail to have eyes that see the Lord and His promises.
