February 2013

For the past number of months we have been using this little column here to work our way through the Catechisms. This is an important exercise as God's Word shapes the disciple's entire life. That Word is given perfect summary in the Ten Commandments, the creeds, and Lord's Prayer (as found in the catechisms of the church). But I have been beginning to think that once a month is not enough time for this sort of exercise. We can never exhaust the riches of the catechisms. They are constantly challenging the way we view of the world, not to mention the role God has for us to play in it.

In an effort to get us thinking Biblically after Sunday morning, I am going to plan on sending out a weekly devotion based on the catechism. I have a number of goals I want to accomplish with these emails.

First, I want to make sure that we are hearing God's perspective on the world. The way we view things is transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans l2:l) that comes from the Word of God. But, if we only hear that Word once a week it may easily be drowned out by the surrounding noise of the culture which bombards us the other six days.

Second, I want to help all of us feel more equipped to defend what we believe and to take a stand with the truth. The Lutheran faith has a rich, down-to-earth, gracious way of handling this life. Being able to defend our faith, but also, go on the offensive and bring some of the hope we have to the world is a great joy! I want these emails to aid us in doing this.

Third, I am hoping that these emails may serve as a way for you to share with others the Good News God has for us. Talking to someone about Jesus is not always easy. However, suggesting they read something that points them to Jesus is very doable. These emails may prove to be a seed that you can plant which may grow into more meaningful conversations with your friends.

How do you get these emails? If you received the "40 Days of James" study last year then you are on the mailing list to receive these emails. If you did not receive those emails or are wondering if you are on the mailing list, shoot me an email and I will sign you up.

In other news: See the announcement concerning Lutheran Hour Ministries' Regional Outreach Conference coming up in early March. This is a great conference that will give our church ideas and resources to use in an effort to share Jesus' Good News with Moorpark. Consider signing up and going!

Finally, Stephanie and I want to extend our thanks to all of you for your kind gift to us this Christmas. We are grateful that you remembered us in such a loving way. What is more, we are very thankful to be a part of this family at Faith. Your love and support towards our family is overwhelming to say the least. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
